Last week, Duluth High School had 8th Grade Parent Night, where uprising freshmen and their parents were invited to come and check out our school, and the classes and programs we offer. On Wednesday, February 8th, 2012, Duluth is also hosting DHS Parent Night. This event will happen between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. An elective fair will be set up so that parents and students can see the electives that are available to students in our school. All additional information about the electives can also be obtained at the elective fair. The DHS Counseling Department will also be offering information about joint enrollment and how students can catch up on grades. At 7:15, a representative from the Georgia Student Finance Commission will be presenting in the DHS Theater. This will give parents the chance to learn more about financial aid to help their child reach higher educational goals. See you there, Duluth!

Dear Della,

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and my boyfriend isn’t a big fan of the holiday, but I really want to celebrate in some way. What should I do?”

Oh, Valentine’s Day- an extremely blatant reminder to plenty of either joy or misery. Many are very cross about Valentine’s Day because it is a “holiday” that can be both fantastic and excruciating at the same time.

1.) Of course the preferable personal situation is to be with someone on this holy day of St. Valentine, but that naturally is not the case for everyone.

2.) It is an extremely commercial “holiday,” thus causing absolute chaos at any venues that are options for a date. I’m guessing that reason two is more compatible with your boyfriend’s perspective of the day, or it could be just simple dislike for the holiday. In any case, if you really want to do something, try going as simple as possible. Doing so says: “I really want to spend the day with you, but I can be flexible in the terms of where.” Everyone sees a movie, or goes to dinner, so it can be tiring and unoriginal to do either of these activities. Instead, maybe propose a picnic, or something that will make it easy on both your parts; maybe that will convince him more. Best of luck to you and your boyfriend, if he goes for the picnic route let us hope the weather will be good.

Dear Tyler

“Valentine’s Day is coming up and my boyfriend isn’t a big fan of the holiday, but I really want to celebrate in some way. What should I do?”

Well I don’t blame him for not liking Valentine’s Day; it’s a Lifetime holiday. You mean to tell us that we have to buy you even more things than we already do? The sum total of a box of chocolates, flowers (only the nicest too), a card, and dinner is over $100. Most guys don’t have that kind of money (I do). However, as your boyfriend, it is his responsibility to satisfy your Valentine’s needs.

Don’t get mad at him because he doesn’t like the holiday, but tell him that you would really like it if he did something special for you. If that doesn’t work, then get mad. I’m not really sure what to tell you, but this isn’t something to break up with him over. Valentine’s Day is a useless holiday that has been hyped up by movies and Hallmark commercials.

Most guys don’t like Valentine’s Day because they have celebrated it as singles awareness day for them at some time. It used to be a holiday where we would put candy in our classmates’ bags on top of their desks in school. Now it is a holiday that emphasizes just how lonely we really are. It’s tough, so don’t think too much of this day.
