On April 22nd, 2012, one billion people in 192 countries around the world participated in the 42nd annual Earth Day. People got together and planted trees, flowers, etc. while also taking part in activities to help improve and clean the environment. It’s a day to reflect on the impact of humans on earth and how we can change it. However, most people don’t know where or how Earth Day started.

Senator Gaylord Nelson, an environmental activist, was deeply concerned for the Earth and urged people to gather at a teach-in and learn about environmental issues. The first Earth Day was on April 22nd, 1970, and it was a huge success. Hundreds of people came to Washington, D.C. and learned how to help clean our living space. People also took petitions to their governmental representatives, which is what Senator Nelson desired. Soon after, the government was creating environmental cleaning acts.

President Nixon himself came up with the Environmental Protection Agency. Shortly after, the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act came into effect. Other programs such as the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Toxic Substance Control Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and the Comprehensive Environmental Response were created to help clean the Earth.

I hope you enjoyed Earth Day, DHS, and participated in cleaning our home!
